Following Battlefield 2042, a lot of Battlefield fans were left disappointed. Although it had some strengths, the franchise’s latest installment seemingly abandoned the squad-focused gameplay that Battlefield is known for. But while DICE is taking the series in a new direction, the community is taking the series back to its roots and slowing things down with the Battlefield 3 Reality Mod.

The Battlefield 3 Reality Mod is a rework of DICE’s fan favorite 2011 first-person shooter. It has been in development for seven years and aims to reimagine Battlefield 3. The official goal of the mod is to “create immersive gameplay and a more realistic experience.” All of the changes made have been done to further this goal.

But what makes the Battlefield 3 Reality Mod different from the vanilla client? There are a huge variety of changes, but some highlights include a simplified user interface, servers that support over 100 players, positional audio on voice chat, and a 24-hour day-night cycle. In addition to all that this mod also introduces a range of custom models, maps, and game modes to keep things fresh.

The mod’s official website has a roadmap detailing all of the developer’s planned features. Some of these are very exciting and fundamentally rework how Battlefield is played. Core mechanics such as healing, spawning, and even weapon handling is all revamped. Nostalgic players may be hesitant to see such an iconic game changed, but it makes sense. Regardless of how beloved Battlefield 3 is, it’s over a decade old. Some of its mechanics just haven’t aged overly well.

How to get involved

If you’re interested in trying out the Battlefield 3 Reality Mod, you can install it through the Venice Unleashed launcher. For a step-by-step walkthrough of the process, be sure to check out the mod’s official wiki. Keep in mind that this is only a mod and therefore a legal copy of the original game is required to run it. More specifically, you’ll need Battlefield 3 (With Premium) as all of the DLC is necessary to run the mod.
