Populating the cosmos may sound like an impossible task in Starfield. And while there are many planets that humans have claimed as new human homes and erected futuristic cities, there are still some planets that are free for us to explore. And by explore, I mean exploit to their very core. Here is how many outposts you can have in Starfield.
Starfield: How many outposts can you have?
Once you start your outpost venture across the Milky Way in Starfield, you will have a limit of eight different outposts to allocate to the different planets and moons across the galaxy. This means that once you have built an Outpost Beacon, one of those outpost slots will be occupied. If you wish to free up some slots since you have found better planets and locations to use your outpost gathering and mining capabilities, then remove said beacons.
How to increase the maximum number of outposts in Starfield

Thankfully, there is a way you can upgrade your outpost building limits and that is by ranking up the Planetary Habitation skill located in the Science Skill Tree. Moreover, you will also unlock the ability to set up outposts in extreme weather environments as well. It is easier said than done, though, because this is a Master-tier skill. This means that you will have to spend a total of 12 skill points in the Science Skill Tree before being able to unlock it. Once you fulfill this requirement, each rank-up will allow you to increase the number of outposts you can build in Starfield. Once at rank 4, you will be able to build a total of 24 different outposts across the cosmos. All you have to do is, well, build habitable outposts on different planets. Planetary Habitation skill ranks
Rank 1
- Challenge: Spend 12 Skill Points in the Science Skill Tree.
- Effects: You can build outposts on planets with extreme temperatures (Deep Freeze and Inferno). Increase the maximum number of Outposts you can build by 4.
Rank 2
- Challenge: Build habitable outposts on 3 different planets.
- Effects: You can build outposts on planets with extreme pressure. Increase the maximum number of Outposts you can build by 8.
Rank 3
- Challenge: Build habitable outposts on 5 different planets.
- Effects: You can build outposts on planets with toxic or corrosive atmospheres. Increase the maximum number of Outposts you can build by 12.
Rank 4
- Challenge: Build habitable outposts on 10 different planets.
- Effects: You can build outposts on planets with extreme gravity. Increase the maximum number of Outposts you can build by 16.
Continue building outposts and leveling up the Planetary Habitation skill to command a plethora of outposts across the Milky Way. You will be a millionaire in no time, as long as you know how to mine resources with every single one of your outpost buildings. Just remember to collect the materials you need to build them and you will get good to go.
