How to complete No Sudden Moves in Starfield

It's okay to be a thief as long as it's for Constellation.

Learning how to complete No Sudden Moves in Starfield doesn’t take long, but you’re going to feel really bad going through the fastest way. It’s not a mission that ends up with you being the good guy, so be prepared to be sneaky or powerful. No matter how you want to go about it, we have a method for you.

Starfield – No Sudden Moves walkthrough

To complete No Sudden Moves, you need to steal an artifact from a space collector. He’s not a bad guy, so you’ll be forced to either attack an innocent person to get it, or steal it. Either way, you’re likely ending this quest with a bounty. To start the quest, you need to go to The Eye and speak to Vladimir, the former pirate. During this time, your overall goal is to fix up The Eye and get ready for what may come, since The Hunter and Starborn are after the artifacts.

While you wait, Vladimir knows of a nearby artifact and he will only let you do this with Barret. After accepting this mission, you are forced to have whichever companion from Constellation is with you as a follower, so if you want to wait to continue the main story, we recommend doing everything you planned before accepting. From here until the mission is over, Sam, Andreja, Barret, or Sarah will remain your follower.

Next, you’ll need to head to Procyon A System, which is slightly left of Sol and Alpha Centauri. The Scrow, the ship you are heading for, orbits the Procyon V-B moon on Procyon V. Fly there with Barret, and decide how you want to enter the ship.

How to enter The Scrow in Starfield

You are technically acting as a pirate because you’re here to steal an innocent Captain’s treasure. So if you want to attack this ship and disable the engines, you can. Feel free to board the ship as a hostile attacker, kill everyone inside, and take the treasure. I would suggest you talk your way into the treasure without much violence since you will receive a bounty for attacking an innocent ship and killing the crew.

Sam will have been a business partner of the captain, so he’s the only one who can talk his way in. The others get rejected because they’re not on a list of people who can see the Captain. So unless you have Sam, your only way in is to persuade your way in. To persuade your way in, you have to focus on talking about how magnificent the ship is, or you can say you want to trade and be let in quickly. It’s orange, so even I was iffy on it but it works well just to pretend you’re a trader.

Once you’re inside you’ll run into a group of mercenaries. It’s okay, they’re more friendly than they look. Go ahead and talk to Tao Xun, who will let you in with no problem regardless of what you tell him. You can ask Tao Xun about what the Captain has collected, which you’ll see later, but it’s mostly ore and other items you’ve probably found during your own explorations.

From there, you can head to Captain Petrov. There are two ways you can do this next part, but I would recommend doing a quick conversation because it is a lot easier than the alternative.

Can you persuade Captain Petrov to give you the artifact?

You can’t persuade Captain Petrov to give you the artifact. He just won’t regardless of what you try, and trust me, I’ve tried to be really convincing. However, talking your way into the vault is still the easiest way to get in. To do this, you can use your companion because Petrov gives in pretty easily.

I used Barret, who just gave a “Petrooooooov it’s me!” and I was let into the vault. You have the option of persuading or attacking, but words are always the smartest choice.

Once you persuade Captain Petrov, he’ll give you a tour of his ship. As Petrov is a very friendly guy, stealing from him makes you feel bad, but it’s for the greater good. Once Petrov is done recalling his own war stories and walking you through a bunch of locked doors, you will end up in his personal vault. Inside, he will reveal the artifact and describe his experience buying it.

You can then choose any option, but none will convince Petrov, so you’ll have to fight. You can end this whole thing with a 500 credit bounty if you just beat the captain, so focus all your weapons on him. He will give up before you can kill him, so don’t worry about needing to murder him for his treasure.

When the fight is done, you can grab the artifact and leave because the guards won’t attack you after Petrov gives up.

How to steal Captain Petrov’s artifact through stealth

Instead of talking to Captain Petrov when you enter the room where he’s in, go to the three guards standing in a circle. They’re known as Erin September, Raptor, and Bull, and will take a 1000 credit bribe to reveal the conveyor system is right behind the vault. It is at this point that the optional objective Find the Thin Walls begins. Go back to Petrov and crouch behind his couch. No one will see you and you can pickpocket him easily from that position.

You can take his Vault key and begin your stealthful approach. Use the quest marker for Find the Thin Walls optional objective to find the cuttable red door. Use your Cutter’s laser to cut through its locks because it’s not as loud as other weapons. When the door is free, you gain entry to a room adjacent to the vault.

Keep a close eye on your stealth meter and save often. You have to sneak through a room full of guards and then cut the door which will get you into the room where the vault is.

From there, use your Vault key to get inside the vault. Steal the artifact and then sneak your way back out.

Should I sneak into the vault on Captain Petrov’s ship or persuade him?

Trust me, it’s not worth it to sneak or stealth in this mission, just persuade Petrov. It’s incredibly difficult to sneak your way into the vault, especially with how easy it is to get caught even if you have the Master Sneaking skill. Even if you’re successful in sneaking in, you end up having wasted far too much time with quicksaves and retrying. Any item you take from that vault is considered stolen, and to be honest, a 500 credit bounty for attacking Petrov the other way isn’t hard to pay off so go ahead and use the easier method I mentioned above.

From there, you head back to the Lodge where the next mission will immediately begin. For more guides on Starfield, stick to PC Invasion.
