To deconstruct an abandoned building in Infection Free Zone, you must first select it. In the menu that appears in the top right, is the button deconstruct it. It’s in the lower right portion of the window and has a hammer on it. Hovering over the buttons with also tell you what they do, making identifying it easy.

Once you’ve clicked that button, you can assign workers to deconstruct it and gather materials. These citizens will be employed as scavengers. From the deconstruction of buildings in Infection Free Zone, you’ll be earning an abundance of resources. It’s also very useful to increase your line of sight for better defensive measures.

Do abandoned buildings respawn in Infection Free Zone?

Many players have reported that buildings they’ve deconstructed do appear to come back when reloading in after a while. It is currently unclear why that is, and I have never personally encountered this.

It may have been a bug or a temporary feature to make resources renewable. Currently, there is no proper way to infinitely acquire wood, metal, and bricks, although Games Operators have said before that they plan to add a Foresters Hut for renewable wood, so there should be other measures for the other materials, too.

I don’t suspect respawning abandoned buildings to be a feature that makes it into full release or even Early Access, especially when the Forester Hut and such get added.

Best deconstructing strategy in Infection Free Zone

You shouldn’t just go about deconstructing any of the surrounding abandoned buildings, however. If you are to survive long in Infection Free Zone, you need to do some forward thinking.

You need to know which abandoned buildings you wish to adapt into useful buildings, like the Cookhouse or Research Center. With your chosen buildings and rough size calculated, make way to deconstruct the buildings around your base.

This will give you room to set up walls and towers. If you have a clear line of sight around your base, thanks to deconstructing the buildings in the way, you’ll be able to destroy the infected much quicker, easing the pressure on your walls.

Ideally, don’t deconstruct too many buildings at a time. This will only divide your workforce. Deconstruct one building, assign as many as you want, and if you have more citizens than that building can handle, then you can choose another to deconstruct.

Deconstructing buildings is a much more streamlined way of gathering materials than area works, so get on that Day One.

With all those resources flooding in, you can start to produce all the other resources in the game.
