Is the Destiny 2 Starter Pack worth it? Answered

A deal forged in Darkness.

Destiny 2 is infamously hard to get into as a new or returning player, so anything to make it easier is a good thing, right? The Destiny 2 Starter Pack sounds like it might help, but it’s certainly raised a few eyebrows in the community.

Writer’s Edit: Since publication, Bungie has removed the Starter Pack from every storefront, including Steam. Not only that, Bungie has addressed the situation on Reddit. The post cites the pack “not bringing joy” as the reason for its removal. Although the announcement doesn’t address the community sticking points, it’s good to see this horrendous ‘deal’ swiftly removed.

What’s included in the Destiny 2 Starter Pack?

The Destiny 2 Starter Pack includes the following items:

  • Sleeper Stimulant Exotic Fusion Rifle
  • Ruinous Effigy Exotic Trace Rifle
  • Traveller’s Chosen Exotic Sidearm
  • Sparrow Skin
  • Ship Skin
  • Ghost Shell
  • 125,000 Glimmer
  • 1 Ascendant Shard
  • 50 Enhancement Cores
  • 5 Enhancement Prisms

Is the Destiny 2 Starter Pack a good deal?

I’d never tell anyone how to spend their money, but as someone with thousands of hours between Destiny and Destiny 2, I wouldn’t recommend this pack to anyone. Don’t just take my word for it. The Destiny 2 community on Reddit has ripped this deal to shreds and lambasted it for its poor value.

The Exotic weapons on offer are pretty decent, but you’ll find all of them and more through regular gameplay.

As a new player, you won’t know the value of things like Glimmer and Ascendent Shards, but you’ll naturally obtain a stockpile of items like this by the time they start to matter. The Steam page for the Starter pack says, “Don’t hesitate to upgrade your favorite gear.” To put the offer into perspective, the materials you get in the pack aren’t sufficient to upgrade a single item into a Masterwork (fully upgraded).

Some players may be attracted to the skins, as fashion is a massive part of Destiny 2. All I can say is if you start sinking time into the game, you’ll amass more cosmetics than you know what to do with.

What should I buy instead of the Starter Pack?

As a new player, you’ll get far more bang for your buck putting money toward an expansion or the Season Pass. The Legacy Collection and Lightfall expansions are great places to start. If you’ve been tempted into trying Destiny 2 by the Season of the Wish trailer, The Season Pass will let you access that content, although the story won’t make much sense without context.
