Microsoft and developer Mojang have announced Minecraft Legends, a new strategy game spin-off for PC and Game Pass in 2023. Legends marks the next spin-off game for the legendary IP. Previously, Mojang broke off from the classic survival gameplay with Minecraft Dungeons, an action RPG with Minecraft as its foundation.
Gameplay-wise, Minecraft Legends has you controlling mobs to face off against some outside threat. It boasts a united world, which means you can control zombie hordes and other creatures. It’s an interesting take: joining forces with well-known Minecraft enemy mobs to defeat an enemy invasion. I can imagine just how fun it could be sending an army of creepers to batter the walls of a base. Please let me do that, Mojang.
The story involves an invasion of piglins, who have apparently entered the world through a Nether portal. They quickly set up bases, such as stone fortresses, and it’s up you to and your allies to remove them from the greener world. You travel around while on horseback, rallying your troops, building bases, and joining the combat yourself.
To arms, zombie villagers!
Minecraft Legends is likely the next spin-off game coming from the Dungeons team. We first heard rumor of its existence a few days ago. However, the game is under development by not just Mojang, but also the Canadian studio Blackbird Interactive, which previously worked on Minecraft Earth. Dungeons was fairly well received, even if the action RPG didn’t quite justify the use of the Minecraft IP. Having the studios work on something different, with actual crafting this time, seems like it could be a good move.
“Discover the mysteries of Minecraft Legends, our upcoming action strategy game,” reads the game’s description. “Explore a familiar yet mysterious land, full of diverse life, lush biomes, and rich resources. But this paradise is on the brink of destruction. The piglins have arrived – and they’re threatening to corrupt the Overworld.”
Minecraft Legends is coming to PC and Game Pass as a day one launch title in 2023.
