A starter quest for the initiate mages in Azeroth. Which basically means a “go ahead and pick that item up” type of quest. Here is how to complete the Spell Research quest in WoW Classic Season of Discovery.
WoW Classic: How to Complete the Spell Research in Season of Discovery
Spell Research is probably one of the first Mage quests you will undergo during the new Season of Discovery in WoW Classic. This mission is exclusive to Human, Gnome, Undead, and Troll Mages, and the only requirement — besides the race — is that you must be a level 2 Mage. There are practically no requirements, and the mission is not as difficult as it may appear. Once you get to level 2, you will have to visit the Mage Trainer corresponding to your race and your initial spawn location. You can see the different Trainer names, locations, and coordinates for each Mage race below. Interact with them and the quest will begin.

Depending on your race, you will have to discover loot or fight some enemies to collect Spell Notes, which are items you are tasked to find during Spell Research. Human and Undead Mages will have to fight enemies to make the notes drop, while the Gnome and Troll Mages will only have to discover the loot cache to collect them.

Once you have collected the corresponding notes, go ahead and come back to your Mage Trainer and you will finish the Spell Research quest in WoW Classic Season of Discovery.
