Starfield: How to prepare ship for Grav Drive in First Contact quest

It's not rocket science. Wait...

During the First Contact quest in Starfield, you’ll need to figure out how to prepare a ship for Grav Drive. Well, only if you decide to purchase a Grav Drive for the large ECS Contact ship with descendants from Earth. You can also convince them to take the settlement deal with Paradiso, but in this case, you’ll need to help an engineer prepare the Grav Drive. It’s a little complicated, as he gives you three complex steps all at once, so let’s help you out with that.

How to prepare Grav Drive for First Contact mission in Starfield

Speak with Amin Kazemi in the Engineering Bay to start the preparations. Although you’ve pulled together your own Credits just to get them a Grav Drive, you need to help them a bit more. How you can prepare the ECS Contact ship for Grav Drive in the First Contact quest in Starfield is by taking on three tasks on three separate computers:

  1. Reroute power from port turbopump to auxiliary cryogenic radiator.
  2. Turn plasma run-off inhibitor function to 5%.
  3. Decouple magnetic flange pipe enclosures from auxiliary module assembly.

Those are a lot of confusing words, right? Well, it’s a lot simpler than you may realize once you actually interact with the computers and see the prompts. The trouble I ran into was remembering exactly what he said, I had to go back and hear Amin’s instructions multiple times.

Step One – Engineering Control Computer Alpha

Head to the computer first with the name ‘Engineering Control Computer Alpha‘, and these are the buttons you’ll hit in this exact order:

  1. Engineering Control Computer Alpha
  2. Turbopump – Port
  3. Cryogenic Radiator – Auxiliary

Step Two – Engineering Control Computer Beta

Next, walk to the corner of the room with ‘Engineering Control Computer Beta‘. You’ll need to do the same thing you did last time, but now with different instructions:

  1. Engineering Control Computer Beta
  2. Plasma Run-Off Inhibiter
  3. 5%

Step Three – Engineering Control Computer Gamma

Finally, head to the main computer near the entrance of the Engineering Bay called ‘Engineering Control Computer Gamma‘. You know what to do, press these buttons in this order:

  1. Engineering Control Computer Gamma
  2. Magnetic Flange Pipe Enclosures
  3. Decouple
  4. Auxiliary Module Assembly

After that’s all complete, you can now speak with the Captain to tell her the good news, and receive your reward! Sadly, she’s not all-that keen on giving you a reward, despite the fact that you paid a lot of Credits for this Grav Drive. The entitlement!
