This map of Faerun shows just how small of an area Baldur’s Gate 3 took place in

More of Faerun to explore.

This post on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit just proved how small of an area the game took place in compared to a large map of Faerun. BG3’s world felt massive, but how big was it really?

Almost all of Baldur’s Gate 3 took place in this small area on the Faerun map

Reddit user “Lwmons” showcased this large map of Faerun on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit while encasing the area that BG3 mainly took place in with a small red box. It took me a second to actually see the box since it was so tiny, but if you enlarge the photo you’ll notice how small of an area BG3 was compared to all of Faerun.

The official world of D&D is Faerun, and the city of Baldur’s Gate with its encompassing environments is just one small snippet of this world. Another BG3 player showcased the entire journey of BG3 on one map, which is interesting to look at compared to the Faerun map. While you may have thought you explored a large portion of Faerun, you’re very wrong.

Anyone well-versed in D&D lore will recognize places like the Sword Coast, Candlekeep, as well as Icewind Dale far to the north. Icewind Dale was a related series to Baldur’s Gate developed by Black Isle Studios back in 2000.

If you zoom into where the city of Baldur’s Gate is, you’ll realize just how small this red box is despite the world of BG3 feeling massive. Although Larian Studios already confirmed that its next title won’t be in the Baldur’s Gate franchise, if another studio decides to make a fourth entry to the series there’s so much space available for a possible story.

Fans in the replies are just as shocked at how large Faerun is compared to where BG3 takes place. One player named “kaefer_kriegerin” mentioned that Gale was right about being a long way from Waterdeep, as you can spot it much farther north along the coast.

Another reply from the user “lesbos_hermit” explained “That’s what happens when people’s main mode of transportation is walking”, which is entirely true. If the party had a better mode of transportation perhaps we’d have an easier time exploring other areas. Speaking of unfound areas, one BG3 player accidentally glitched into the character creation area while in-game.
