Are you a Warhammer: Vermintide fan? You’re not?! Well, I’ve got some great news that you can share with your friends who do like that series, as developer Fatshark is back at it again with an all-new four-player co-op game called Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. Whereas Vermintide (whose name I got just now — it’s a literal tide of vermin, and now everything makes sense) was solely focused on melee combat, this time, lasers have been brought into the mix. Not only can you and three friends hack and slash your way through throngs of enemies, now you can shoot them in the face too. Which makes it more like the game Vermintide is already aping. Huh.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is set in the hive city Tertium, where a cult known as the Admonition is trying to attain control of the planet Atoma Prime so that they can, uh, kill everything or something. Cults are always up to some nasty business, aren’t they? Luckily, players take control of characters who are part of the Inquisition to fight back against them. Wait, the Inquisition is the good guys?! I don’t know anything about Warhammer. Anyways, the game has multiple classes that you can customize, which includes loadouts. Standard co-op action game stuff.

The developer has also uploaded a two-minute trailer showing off a mixture of gameplay and pre-rendered cutscenes. The game’s visuals appear to be excellent, as it takes place in dark, grimy interiors as you hack, slash, and blast vicious-looking enemies to pieces. Both melee and ranged attacks are shown off and it looks like a blast. You also get a look at some of the character classes including such favorites as Big Guy and Woman.
There’s no release date for the game just yet but it’s due sometime next year. In the meantime, you’ll probably keep playing Vermintide II.
