Who to take when space travelling.

In Starfield, there are a few companions you can really get to know through Constellation, and other people you can hire for your crew. Sometimes they can follow you around during missions, or you can assign them to outposts or ships. But each crew member has certain skills that can help you during specific situations, like when you’re using your spaceship. Let’s go over the best crew member companions to have on your ship in Starfield.

Starfield: Best companions and crew members for your ship

There are plenty of options to choose from when deciding who to bring alongside you during your ship travels. The best companions to have on your ship in Starfield have to be Barrett, Sam Coe, and Sarah Morgan, but a crew member like Amelia Earhart, Omari Hassan, or Moara Otero is also a great pick.

Best companions to have on your ship in Starfield

When deciding on your best companions through Constellation, there are three terrific options for ship crew. I’ll outline everyone’s traits, and why they matter when flying your ship through the star systems.

  • Barrett:
    • Starship Engineering: Level 4
    • Particle Beam Weapon Systems: Level 3
    • Robotics: Level 2
    • Gastronomy: Level 1

The reason why Barrett can be a great asset on your ship is because of his Starship Engineering and Particle Beam Weapon Systems skills. While the former can increase your survivability in space combat, the latter increases damage from Particle Beam weapons. If your ship has those types of weapons, make sure to bring Barrett along.

  • Sam Coe:
    • Piloting: Level 4
    • Rifle Certification: Level 3
    • Payloads: Level 2
    • Geology: Level 1

If you’re running low on cargo space, Sam Coe’s Payloads skill can increase your ship’s cargo capacity. Also, his Piloting skill will add to your system power. These two abilities are quite useful during space travel, while Barrett’s abilities are better for space combat.

  • Sarah Morgan:
    • Astrodynamics: Level 4
    • Lasers: Level 3
    • Leadership: Level 2
    • Botany: Level 1

With Sarah Morgan on your ship, her Astrodynamics skill will reduce your grav jump fuel cost. Honestly, this has never been much of an issue for me, since you typically only travel between a few nearby star systems at a time. Otherwise, she has skills that increase proficiency with laser weapons, and upgrade health and carry capacity. I really only think her first skill is useful while on the ship, but her others are good for when she’s tagging alongside you.
