If you decide to skip past the New Light experience in Destiny 2, then you can select one of three New Light Kits. With three classes and three New Light Kits, so nine options in total, it can be difficult knowing which one is the best. As a Destiny 2 veteran sherpa, I’m here to guide you through it.

How to get a New Light Kit in Destiny 2?
The only way to get a New Light Kit is to skip the Destiny 2 New Light experience. If you play through the New Light experience, which is the tutorial that I find long, confusing, and tedious, you basically get everything the New Light Kit offers. If you skip the New Light experience, which is a feature that is just one reason why Destiny 2 Into the Light is the best for new players, you get access to a New Light Kit.
Each class — Hunter, Warlock, and Titan — has a Void, Arc, and Solar New Light Kit. You get to choose one. Strand and Stasis are the Darkness subclasses that unlock via expansions (Beyond Light and Lightfall, respectfully), so they aren’t choices here. I’m going to split the best New Light Kit selection up by class, but before that, here is what a New Light Kit gets you in Destiny 2:
- Access to all of one subclass’s abilities, Aspects, and Fragments
- Two Legendary weapons
- One Exotic weapon
- Four Rare armor pieces and a Legendary class item
Best Hunter New Light Kit in Destiny 2
For every class, there is no bad subclass. Each subclass is fairly well-balanced for PvE and PvP in Destiny 2. However, there are some that have slight edges over others, and for Hunters, I think Void is one of the best subclasses in the game. Void Hunters excel at hitting hard and going invisible which is a fun and effective playstyle that isn’t hard to master and is good in every game mode.
Solar Hunter is the second-best New Light Kit pick for Hunters in my opinion because the Gunslinger Super, while a great fantasy that is very powerful, can be hard to use. Just like how it helps Solar Warlocks and Solar Titans be the best, the Solar subclass helps Hunters stay alive thanks to helpful verbs like Restoration and Cure. Regardless of class, you can’t go wrong with Solar if you’re a new player.
Arc Hunter is arguably the worst Hunter subclass, but it’s still incredibly good. In general, Arc is the worst Light subclass because it doesn’t have survivability verbs like Solar and Void do. It can be better at clearing adds because of Jolt’s chained lightning and Ionic Traces giving you ability energy, but you’ll always have a harder time staying alive.
Best Warlock New Light Kit in Destiny 2
Warlock is my main class in Destiny 2 and I can confidently say all three New Light Kit subclasses are fun, but some are definitely stronger than others. Solar is undoubtedly the best Warlock subclass for new and veteran players because of the Well of Radiance Super. Dawnblade is also fun and great for dealing damage, but the health and damage buff you and your team get in Well of Radiance is unmatched.
Void Warlock is very powerful, fun, and easy to use thanks to useful Void verbs like Devour and Void Overshield that help keep you alive. I mainly use Void Warlock if I want to focus on clearing adds or dealing big damage to bosses. It’s absolutely a fun and easy-to-use subclass which makes it a great alternative to Solar — it just focuses more on damage instead of support.
Arc Warlock is the worst of the three Light subclasses because it doesn’t have the same survivability or raw damage output as Solar and Void. That said, Arc Warlock is my favorite to use out of these three because it’s fast.
Best Titan New Light Kit in Destiny 2
Just like Hunters and Warlocks, Titans have three great Light subclasses to choose from. Each one is powerful, but the winner is Solar Titan. It’s easy to stay alive with Solar Titan, you’ll clear rooms of adds with ease thanks to Scorch and Ignition, and the Hammer of Sol Super is amazing for bonking any kind of enemy.
Arc Titan is worth shouting out as a great option. It still falls flat when compared to the survivability that Solar and Void offer, but, thanks to the Thundercrash Super that allows you to leap into the air, fly, and crash down with electricity all around you, Arc Titan is a Superman fantasy that puts in work, especially at close range.
Void Titan is a great subclass that excels at defense. Where Solar Titan excels at ranged combat and Arc Titan excels at melee combat, Void Titan is the Captain America build that gives you a Void shield or Void bubble. Void is good with every class, but I think Solar and Arc feel and perform slightly better on Titan.
