FromSoftware has surprise announced its first significant expansion for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree. While the announcement was scarce on details, lore-savvy fans deduce the DLC revolves around Miquella from the concept art shared. Miquella is the brother of Malenia, whom she so fiercely protected from players by defeating them hundreds of times. Here’s everything we know so far about Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion details

Of course, the only detail FromSoftware shares are that the DLC is in development. However, Miquella being the subject of its story seems like a pretty safe bet, given the shared concept art and how the character was used in the base game. Elden Ring‘s main story mentions Miquella throughout, but he’s never interacted with in person. The closest we get is the cocoon in Mohg’s arena, which contains Miquella. Mohg kidnapped Miquella, and was using him to feed the blood god he worships.

Besides that, Miquella is Malenia’s twin brother and cursed to remain forever young. When Malenia became infected with the Scarlet Rot, Miquella tried curing her using the Haligtree. Miquella grew the Haligtree himself to chastise the Golden Order religion that pervades the Lands Between.

Miquella’s Haligtree serves as a safe haven for those exiled or persecuted by the Golden Order. Players spent countless hours and attempts trying to beat Malenia in this Haligtree. However, Malenia herself states Miquella is more “fearsome” than even her. If so, players are in for a wild, and probably very difficult, ride with this expansion.

According to the official site, the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion will release on the PC and other platforms. There is no release date yet, but we’ll keep an eye out and prepare plenty of Crimson Tears to prepare for the pain ahead.
