As a witch or wizard in Hogwarts Legacy, you’re definitely tied to the wand that you’re using. At the start of the campaign, you’ll only have a second-hand item. Hogwarts Legacy guide – How to customize your wand and pick the best wand core
You’ll be able to customize your wand in Hogwarts Legacy roughly an hour or so into the campaign. That’s when you’ll get to visit the village of Hogsmeade as part of the main quest. One objective here is to visit Ollivanders, the finest wandmakers in the land.
After a cutscene, you’re presented with your wand. If you completed the Wizarding World quiz and linked your account, you should have an item based on the results of the quiz itself. For instance, you could just as easily get an Elder Wood Wand.

To be clear, though, the system of wand customization in Hogwarts Legacy still allows you to make changes as you see fit. Here are the things you can tweak, and they’re purely cosmetic:
- Wand Style – This panel has the general design and shape of the wand. Some are fairly straight and smooth, while others look almost like gnarled branches. Each type also has three unique color schemes or patterns to choose from.
- Wood Type – These mostly refer to the characteristics of the item itself, such as the material, length, and flexibility.

What about the cores?
There are three wand cores in Hogwarts Legacy and, as of now, we’ve yet to notice a major difference (at least in the early game):
- Dragon Heartstring – Can produce powerful magic.
- Unicorn Hair – Can produce consistent magic.
- Phoenix Feather – Can produce a great range of magic.
In any case, once you’re done with your selections, switch to the Finalize Wand tab. This completes the process, and you’ll have your item good to go. Don’t forget that you can find wand handles in the game world, too.
