How to get and smuggle Aurora in Starfield

A rare and illegal chem.

All the stimulants and chems you can get your hands on in Starfield can make your character boosted and buffed. Although you have to be mindful of Stimulant Addiction, one of the most illegal stimulants in this game is Aurora. It’s difficult to come by, and it’ll sound off any contraband alarms if you’re not careful. Luckily, I’m here to help, so here’s how you can get and smuggle Aurora in Starfield.

Starfield: Where to buy, craft, and smuggle Aurora

There are two ways in Starfield to get your hands on some Aurora. The first method is to purchase it at the Astral Lounge in Neon, and the second method is learning to craft it. Let me explain first how you can actually buy this illegal chem.

Where to buy Aurora in Starfield

You’ll want to make your way to the city Neon on the planet Volii Alpha in the Volii system. Find the Astral Lounge, it’s near the far end of the main strip. You can’t miss that bright sign. Once inside, talk to the bartender, and he’ll sell you some Aurora. But what exactly does Aurora do?

This stimulant is an addictive hallucinogen that’s only legal in Neon. If you consume it, time slows by 40% for 10 seconds. In the middle of combat, this is a pretty neat chem to use to gain the advantage and slow down time. But again, be wary of gaining the Stimulant Addiction status effect.

If you don’t want to keep purchasing it, you can actually craft it yourself! There’s only one way to learn how to craft Aurora, and it’s not through the Research Lab. On your first trip to Neon, before you enter the city, you’ll stumble upon a confrontation. Neon Security is arresting someone named Neshar, and if you speak to him in Neon Security HQ inside the jail cells, you’ll trigger the quest ‘Loose Ends’.

This quest leads you to learning how to manufacture this stimulant. The quest trails onto another called ‘Fishy Business’, which has you learn the ins and outs of crafting Aurora. By the end of this questline, you’ll know how to craft Aurora at Pharmaceutical Labs! The recipe is a little more complex than you may realize:

  • x1 Benzeme
  • x1 Stimulant
  • x2 Hallucinogen
  • x1 Chasmbass Oil

This Chasmbass Oil is pretty rare to come by, and you can purchase it from the Trade Authority, or Neon’s various vendors. If you want to get your hands a little more dirty, you can go fishing to get some of the oil instead. Head below into the waters from the Xenofresh Lab you first made Aurora in. You should see some Chasmbass fish swimming around. Fall down, and kill some fish to gain some Chasmbass Oil!

Aurora is extremely illegal outside of Neon. If you attempt to take it out of Neon, you’re screwed. The guards will stop you before you can leave. The trick here is to avoid the guards altogether. Luckily, there’s an extremely easy way to do this.

Head to the Ebbside district of Neon, and find the closest stairwell. Keep heading up the stairs until you make it to the very top of Neon. From there, find where your ship is, and you can jump right down and over the guards. Make sure to use your boost pack to get over there quickly and safely. If you’re looking to get rid of your Aurora, selling it at the Trade Authority is your best bet.

Holding contraband like Aurora in your spaceship is tricky, especially when you travel between planets. You’ll want to follow our guide on getting past contraband scanners if you’re planning to fly around with Aurora.
