Starfield has three unique religions that each have their own ideologies and practices. To help you learn more about joining and leaving a religion in Starfield, let this guide be your guide.

All ways to join a religion in Starfield

The easiest way to join a religion in Starfield is through a religion Trait in the character creation menu.
However, when I was making my character, I felt like the religion descriptions didn’t provide enough information to join one (but I knew I didn’t want to join Serpent’s Embrace because it’s one of the worst Traits in Starfield). I asked myself: is there a way to join a religion in Starfield after character creation?
After talking to multiple NPCs in multiple religious houses of worship, I discovered that it isn’t possible to join a religion after the character creation menu. So, the only way to join a religion in Starfield is through the religion Traits in character creation.
I get why Bethesda might have made this choice. They probably don’t want people joining religions to get to their chests and then leave immediately. But Starfield is a self-proclaimed “do whatever you want” game, so I don’t see why I can’t join a religion after character creation. Hopefully, this is fixed in a future update but if not, we’ll probably see modders do the work Bethesda should have done themselves.
How to leave a religion in Starfield

There are many ways to remove your Traits in Starfield, but you’ll be happy to find out that you can leave your religion and remove your religion Trait.
To leave your religion, simply talk to the head of the house of worship and choose the dialogue options that get you to permanently remove your religion Trait. You’ll see the [Remove X religion Trait permanently] in the dialogue options, and that is your ticket out.
