The environment strikes back.

While there are many friendly environments like New Atlantis, many planets and moons will often feature extreme weather, radiation, and toxic waste, among others. Thankfully, as space travelers, we are equipped with suits that will protect us from said conditions. However, not everything goes as planned all the time, and systems often fail. Environmental damage in Starfield is a broad concept that encompasses both afflictions and temporary health-limiting damage. You can attest to this whenever you visit any planet or moon with extreme weather conditions. After being exposed for a while to extreme environments, your suit’s protection system will fail, which will in turn slightly affect your health bar and apply certain afflictions such as hypothermia or cough. As you probably know, to get rid of these afflictions, you will have to visit a Reliant Medical center or use any medical supplies that will heal your specific afflictions.

However, no medical supply or even Med Packs can remove environmental damage. You will see an orange bar increasingly limiting your health points. This is the environmental damage that your body is receiving. To remove this environmental damage, you will have to get indoors to an area where there is breathable oxygen and a stable atmosphere. Entering outposts and your ship will do the trick.

Be sure to carry medical supplies with you. Even if they do not cure environmental damage, the effect will limit your HP. This, in turn, will make encounters even more difficult than before. This makes healing more of a priority. Your suit will also regain its environmental protection once you get inside a building or ship.
