Diablo 4 is coming to Steam – Is it playable on Steam Deck?

Slaying demons on the go has never been easier.

Blizzard has announced that Diablo 4 will be making its way to Steam alongside the launch of its second season, Season of Blood. With PC players no longer confined to only the Battle.net launcher, does this mean Diablo 4 is finally playable directly on Steam Deck? This article tells you everything you need to know about D4’s arrival on Steam, including cross-platform progression, price, and more.

When Diablo 4 launches on Steam on October 17, 2023, it will be Steam Deck compatible, according to global community development director Adam Fletcher. No need to mess around with files and ProtonQT; you can simply launch Diablo straight from your Steam library! Squashing demons in Helltides and grinding the Season Pass on the go has never been easier.

How smoothly Diablo 4 runs on the Steam Deck remains to be seen, though the response to Overwatch 2’s Steam release from Steam Deck users appears mostly positive. Not the reviews themselves, though; that’s a whole other story.

Does the Steam version of Diablo 4 have cross-progression and cross-platform?

The Steam version of Diablo 4 fully supports both cross-play and cross-progression. Linking your Blizzard account to Steam will also link your progress in Diablo 4, no matter which platform(s) you play on. If you’re a console player who’s picked up a Steam Deck for your travels, you can seamlessly switch between the Steam Deck and console version of D4 with no issues.

Cross-play support also means you can play the Steam version of Diablo 4 with friends on Battle.net, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 by adding their BattleTag.

Does Diablo 4 support Steam Achievements and features?

Like Overwatch 2’s Steam release, Diablo 4 supports Steam Achievements and features like the friend list and invite system. Any achievements you’ve earned on other platforms should retroactively unlock once you launch the game for the first time. There’s no word on Points Shop items, like animated backgrounds, but a guy can dream, right?

Do I need to buy Diablo 4 again if I already own the Battle.net version?

Unfortunately, you will need to purchase Diablo 4 again if you decide to transition from Battle.net to Steam. No official price has been confirmed, though it’ll likely cost the same as Battle.net, Xbox, and PS5 digital storefronts.
