Nier Automata Anime

NieR: Automata is getting an anime adaptation

Return to the post-post-apocalypse once more.

Of all the games that came out in 2017, Yoko Taro’s NieR: Automata stood tall as one of the most impactful. Its predecessor NieR already had a significant cult following, but the sequel’s more polished gameplay mechanics and presentation, as well as its compelling narrative elements, helped make it a surprise hit. The game’s success also resulted in a few crossovers with noteworthy games, like Soulcalibur VI and Fall Guys. As of right now, it appears that the hype surrounding NieR: Automata has not subsided one bit, as Square Enix just revealed that the game will receive an anime adaptation.

This announcement came alongside a brief teaser for the show. Aside from a piece of concept art depicting protagonist 2B and her robot companion Pod 042, the trailer did not show any substantial information. Even so, fans of the game will likely appreciate the lines of text that read “All beings were designed to perish” and “We’re still trapped… in a repeating spiral of life and death,” as they directly reference similar lines in the game’s opening.

Anything else?

The anime has its own official website, but it too contains very little information. It only features a brief news update that discusses the decision to make this show, as well as the aforementioned teaser trailer. This update also provides a short plot summary that essentially lines up with the premise of the game. Based on a tweet, it appears that Aniplex will have some part in the anime, though.

The announcement of the NieR: Automata anime is a big one and serves as a testament to the overwhelming success of the game. Admittedly, it’s difficult to imagine the anime living up to that of the game, especially since some of NieR: Automata’s most impactful moments take advantage of the gaming medium. But, it will nonetheless be interesting to see how the studio working on the anime will rise up to the challenge.
