Ground Zeroes platform exclusive DLC unlocked in a new update

Before Ground Zeroes was released, Hideo Kojima revealed that each platform would get their own exclusive DLC. The Xbox platforms got a side mission called “Jamais vu” which allowed you to play as Raiden whereas the PlayStation 3 and 4 got a side mission called “Déjà vu” which allowed you to play as Solid Snake as he appeared in Metal Gear Solid on the PS1.

It seems these side missions are both going to become available to PlayStation and Xbox owners alike as an update, which is due on May 1st, will unlock these missions. It’s good to see Konami is not charging for these bits of DLC as that might tip all the critics of Ground Zeroes short length over the edge.

Hideo Kojima discusses the process of transforming Snake into Big Boss

Naked Snake AKA Big Boss is one of the most complex characters in the Metal Gear universe which is saying quite a lot. He was first introduced as a villain in the 1987 game Metal Gear and was again the villain in the 1990 game Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. There was more to the character than met the eye however and his origins were the focus of the 2004 game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. We learned that Big Boss is actually a hero who has saved the world numerous times and simply wants soldiers to be able to choose what they fight for rather than being pawns of their governments.

To achieve this goal Big Boss does commit some questionable acts and you can understand how from some perspectives he is a tragic villain. In the more recent Metal Gear Solid games we’ve only seen Big Boss as a hero who is mentally and physically scarred by the events of Snake Eater. We still don’t know how he went from a hero and a patriot and turned into a mercenary. It seems these questions are going to be answered in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which will show Snake’s transformation into Big Boss.

Kojima explains why Ground Zeroes has no Platinum Trophy, plus Phantom Pain release date rumours

This week Ground Zeroes will be released on various dates throughout the world. However some fans have noted that the game doesn’t feature a platinum Trophy which is the Trophy you unlock after gaining all the other Trophies.

When asked on Twitter why this was the case, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima answered that Sony doesn’t allow platinum Trophies for non full priced games. Given that Ground Zeroes is a short prologue to The Phantom Pain, it is cheaper than most games, because of this it seems Sony have denied it a platinum Trophy.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes won’t have many cutscenes

The Metal Gear Solid franchise is known for many things. Awesome stealth action? Check. Intense boss battles? You bet. Beautiful graphics? Of course. It’s also known for its lengthy and cinematic cutscenes which have become a staple of the series. More casual players tend to dislike these lengthy scenes though many Metal Gear fans enjoy them greatly.

So far almost every Metal Gear game has featured long cutscenes but it seems Ground Zeroes will buck that trend. during an AMA on Twitch, franchise creator Hideo Kojima stated that he utilized as few cutscenes as possible whilst creating Ground Zeroes. He explained that the story is meant to be driven by the player’s actions rather than separate cutscenes. He also said that there would be pockets of information spread throughout the environment. Perhaps this means there will be collectible items that will expand the games story depending on how deep you dive in.

Konami announce Ground Zeroes Pre-Order bonuses

Konami have revealed that there will be pre-order bonuses for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and that actions performed in Ground Zeroes will carry over and affect the story of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The pre-order bonuses include exclusive content such as special staff members which can be used to boost your Mother Base stats in The Phantom Pain.

Mother Base was first seen in Peace Walker and you could recruit new members who could be assigned to different roles which would boost the overall stats of Mother Base. This feature will be reintroduced in Ground Zeroes and will play an even larger role in The Phantom Pain. Konami has said that the pre-order staff members will give players “a key advantage” when they begin The Phantom Pain. Your staff members improve your base’s stats which in turn boosts how many new weapons and tech you can get, so having good staff members early on should prove very useful.

Hideo Kojima wants to push the limits saying “if we don’t cross that line games will only be games”

Metal Gear Solid is no stranger to the darker themes of life. It’s a franchise based around war and all the terrible effects it has on everyone it touches. However, it has become clear that the two new upcoming Metal Gear games, Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain will be a lot darker and grittier than previous installments. Recent trailers for the game have sparked some controversy as they show child soldiers and torture.

In a recent interview with Examiner.com, Hideo Kojima explained why he believes games shouldn’t shy away from mature themes and that this is something that should not be avoided if games are ever going to be accepted as art in the same way TV, books and movies are.
